Blog: Sleep questions for the moms out there

I don't think many people out there read this, but for those who do, and who have kids, I am very curious to hear from you how it worked in getting your kids to sleep through the night. Did you use the "cry it out" method? Did you try co-sleeping? Pros? Cons?

Blog: Did not inherit that from me...

Annabelle has started to fight off sleep, her beautiful little face crumbling in protest as the sleepiness overtakes her before naptime during the day, or before bedtime. She'll wake up twice after we put her down in the evenings, protesting futilely as we rock her back to sleep.

This is not something she got from me, because I LOVE to sleep. LOVE IT. You do not need to ask me twice to go to sleep. I have not had a full night's sleep since the beginning of the pregnancy, so 15 months now! Oh, how I miss it...

Blog: Another developmental milestone: the raspberry

Yesterday, somewhat abruptly and with the assistance of her father, Annabelle mastered the raspberry. You know, pfffffffffthhhhh. It makes me laugh out loud every time. She sees me, smiles, then goes pfffffffffthhhhh, saliva flying everywhere. The moms reading this are probably like, eh, this is old hat, the raspberry, my child has done it for years, but I am finding it so funny. Video available upon request.

Blog: Separation of church and state

In my zeal for Facebook I befriended everyone I could find, including a bunch of co-workers. This makes it difficult, however, when I want to gripe about work, about how my job has deteriorated into a daily grind of herding grumpy @#$ cats, which is making me VERY CRANKY. Because surely my Facebook co-workers would wonder if they were among the aforementioned cats. And maybe they are.

Blog: Next thing you know she'll be asking for a cell phone

Annabelle can now roll over. One second she's on her back and then she's a foot away on her tum. In her crib she can also do a breakdancing kind of move that rotates her body 180 degrees. I will try to obtain video of these new feats.

Meanwhile, the weekend with a set of grandparents has been lovely. They looked after her while J and I had dinner at our favorite sushi place. Fantastic.

Blog: Another developmental milestone

Annabelle is mastering the skill of putting her foot into her mouth. I do that metaphorically on a regular basis (like last week, when I asked a coworker how his wife liked his new beard, and he replied that she didn't mind one way or another because she'd left him), but do not have the limberness to do it literally. (Not that I've actually tried; I'm just guessing based on how inflexible I was while doing yoga today.)

Blog: Status update

Annabelle came through her four-month check-up with flying colors. She continues to be long and lean, coming in at the 50th percentile in weight but 95th percentile in height! It's no wonder that her little feet pop out of the footie pajamas for her age group. She tolerated the shots better than last time, though that was probably because we were better prepared to whisk her into our arms the second they were over. So far no projectile vomiting, either. And her eye is almost completely healed.

The doctor said we could start her on rice cereal whenever we feel like she's ready, which she's exhibiting signs of--lots of drooling and rapt fascination at the sight of us eating.

She's started making this funny gutteral growl that reminds me of the Wicked Witch of the West, and I always want her to finish it off with, "I'll get you, my pretty, and your little dog too!" So far just the growl, though.

Blog: Fussy gussy

Annabelle is a very crabby banana as a result of having poked herself in the eye and scratching her cornea earlier today. She did it while eating and flailing in enthusiasm, and within a few hours her eye was red, puffy, and very watery, and she became very fussy indeed. We had to call her pediatrician because the internet scared me with dire stories, but the doctor (whom we coincidentally are seeing tomorrow for Annabelle's four-month check-up) was very reassuring that though it is painful now, it will heal quickly. So we just need to soothe her. It's very unusual for her to be so fussy, so we know it will pass.

Blog: A is for Annabelle

Annabelle is a sweet-tempered and charming little girl who is starting to express her preferences. Look how cute she is!

Things she loves:

1) Dad. Sure, she loves the Lady With the Boobs, too, but she just lights up with delight when she sees Dad in the morning, when he comes into a room.
2) The changing table. This is her happy place, where she can kick out her legs and laugh.
3) Ceiling fans. An endless source of fascination.
4) The hair dryer; its white noise soothes every time.
5) The mobile above the crib:

6) Her right thumb.

Things she does not care for, not one bit:

1) Shots. The only time I've seen her shed tears was after her first two vaccinations. I dread her four-month checkup, in just a week, for the repeat of the vaccinations.
2) Getting her nails trimmed. Claire gave me an awesome pair of Japanese nail scissors that make the job much easier, but still, trimming teeny tiny nails that are being moved about is very, very tricky. But look how cute her feet are!
3) The blender. That noise, apparently, is not soothing white noise.
4. The sound of Velcro.
